BALTIMORE, MD (January 10, 2019) – To bring an element of surprise and delight to the transit experience, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has kicked off its “Music in Transit” program by installing an acoustic piano at the Charles Center Metro SubwayLink Station for transit riders to enjoy playing and listening to. The instrument, labeled “Play us a song. I’m the piano, man,” is one of five that were donated to MDOT MTA, courtesy of the Maryland State Arts Council, for placement at various Metro SubwayLink stations.
"Despite our hectic lifestyles, music touches people of all ages in so many ways," said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. "That's why we’re thrilled to offer this rewarding experience to our transit riders. Now, instead of just staring at their phone screens, passengers are welcome to share the joy of playing live music or simply enjoy watching someone else play a moving melody."
Just before the Christmas holiday, Metro SubwayLink riders at the Charles Center station were treated to performances by pianist Isaiah Darius, with financial support from the Maryland State Arts Council. The piano will remain in the station for musically talented transit riders to play and enjoy free of charge. The four other donated and refurbished pianos will be placed in additional Metro SubwayLink stations over the next several months.
MDOT MTA is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MDOT MTA operates LocalLink and commuter buses, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, MARC Train service and a comprehensive Mobility paratransit system. MDOT MTA’s goal is to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
