FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Heavy Rains Require Additional Repairs to Mitigate Future Erosion
BALTIMORE, MD (AUGUST 7, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) continues to implement repairs to permanently stabilize sections of the Light RailLink track that eroded during the recent severe storms. Light RailLink service from Patapsco to Cromwell and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport stations is expected to resume on August 20. Continued record rainfall has delayed the completion of the repairs. Free shuttle buses will continue to accommodate passengers at all impacted stations until Light RailLink service is fully restored.
“The men and women of MDOT MTA are working tirelessly to get our Light RailLink service back up and running as quickly as possible” said MDOT MTA Chief Operations Officer Sean Adgerson. “Despite the heavy rain that’s hammered the region, our crews are making progress and creating safe conditions for everyone who rides our system. We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding.”
To mitigate flooding and future erosion in the area of the Twin Oaks Light RailLink grade crossing, over the next two weeks MDOT MTA will construct a 36-inch drain pipe under the tracks. This repair work will involve cutting and removing sections of track, gravel and soil, building a pipe and then excavating an area 40 feet wide and 16 feet deep. A 1,200-foot-long concrete drain will also be constructed to minimize potential flooding. To further stabilize the area, reinforcements will be constructed along the hillside next to the tracks.
MDOT MTA is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MDOT MTA operates LocalLink and commuter buses, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train service and a comprehensive Mobility (paratransit) system. MDOT MTA’s goal is to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
